The Denver Broncos declined to exercise the fifth-year option on nose tackle Sylvester Williams' rookie contract, the team announced Monday.

The Broncos opted not to pick up the option, which was set for $6.757 million in 2017, as they believe the figure exceeds Williams' market value, according to Mike Klis of 9News.

Denver may still attempt to negotiate a long-term deal with Williams, notes Klis, but wanted to avoid setting the starting point at the value of the option year. If the two parties are unable to come to terms on a contract, Williams will hit free agency next offseason.

Williams is a valuable member of the Broncos' defensive line rotation, but has failed to live up to expectations after being selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

It appears the Broncos will let Williams prove he's worthy of a long-term deal over the 2016 campaign.
