Tigers' Martinez slams paltry offense after loss to A's

Victor Martinez was straightforward and to the point when describing how the Detroit Tigers played Tuesday in a 5-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics, who were led by a stellar pitching performance from Rich Hill.

"Bottom line: The guy threw good," Martinez told reporters. "We were horses--- as an offense."

Martinez's assessment of the Tigers offense comes on the heels of losing seven of its last 10 games, while sluggers Miguel Cabrera, Justin Upton, and J.D. Martinez attempt to find their forms with the bat.

Cabrera showed some signs of life Monday with a two home run performance, but Upton and J.D. Martinez have struggled mightily.

Upton expects to see a turnaround soon.

"I'm gonna hit," Upton explained. "It's just a matter of time. It's just things aren't falling. I hit the ball hard tonight that didn't go my way. But at the same time, I gotta have better at-bats. Some of my at-bats haven't been very good, so at the end of the day if I put together four at-bats it's going to come."

After an offseason that featured a major overhaul and a lot of spending, Detroit sits fourth in the American League Central with a 9-10 record.
