Veteran outfielder David Murphy, who asked the Minnesota Twins for his release Monday, is expected to retire from Major League Baseball.

The 10-year veteran, who signed with the Twins on April 14 after being released by the Boston Red Sox at the end of March, told Mike Berardino of the Twins Cities Pioneer Press he was "done" with baseball.

"I think I'm done playing," he explained Monday. "It was definitely a tough decision, but it wasn’t an emotional decision I made over a few minutes or even an hour. A lot of time went into it, and I know I made the right decision."

Murphy was playing with the Twins Triple-A affiliate in Rochester before making his decision, and was thankful general manager Terry Ryan was so accommodating.

"He cared more about my life than about my career," Murphy said of the GM. "I leave the Twins having a whole lot of respect for him."

The 34-year-old Murphy owns a career slash line of .274/.333/.432 with 104 home runs and 472 RBIs across his time split between the Red Sox, Twins, Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and Los Angeles Angels.
