Troy Tulowitzki's frustrating season took another unwanted turn Saturday, as the Toronto Blue Jays announced the veteran shortstop has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right quadriceps strain.

The 31-year-old left Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees with tightness in his right quad, and sat out the Blue Jays' next two contests. He returned Friday night and played all nine innings in the team's 7-5 win over the Boston Red Sox, but aggravated the issue during the contest and was sent for an MRI, manager John Gibbons told reporters Saturday morning.

Tulowitzki told reporters that the MRI showed a "low-grade" strain, and he "definitely" expects to return to action in 15 days' time.

"Nothing serious, but enough to put me on the DL," he explained.

The aggravation had a noticeable affect on Tulowitzki in Friday's game, particularly in the field, where the normally sure-handed shortstop committed a throwing error.

"I wasn't myself out there," he said. "That's not me at all. Usually I'm throwing on the run and pretty accurate. I set my feet and threw it wide."

The injury comes at a particularly rough moment for Tulowitzki, given that he seemed to be turning a corner at the plate. After a very slow start to his first full season in Toronto, the five-time All-Star slashed .293/.341/.463 over the last two weeks.

In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays activated left-handed reliever Aaron Loup from the disabled list.
