Auburn QB Barrett willing to play other roles for Tigers

Given the struggles Auburn quarterbacks went through last season, incoming freshman Woody Barrett had a real chance of claiming the starting job this fall.

If Barrett doesn't win the role, though, he's content using his athleticism in any way the Tigers need.

"Whatever the team needs, I’m there," Barrett told Brandon Marcello of SEC Country. "I’m a big asset to the team. If they want me to play that role, then I’ll play that role."

Barrett's athleticism was on full display in high school, as he threw for more than 2,000 yards and ran for more than 1,400 more on his way to a 43-touchdown senior campaign.

"He’s a great kid but we had to poke at the bear a little bit," West Orange High coach Bob Head said. "He’s the top dog around here and he’s so strong, so physically gifted, but he can be a prime time player now. I’m telling you that. He can be that guy. I’ve seen him take over games by himself. He’s physically a strong kid."

There's also the option that Auburn could decide to redshirt Barrett, but coming off a season where they struggled to make a bowl game, the Tigers may have no choice but to find a way to get Barrett on the field in some capacity.
