"Purple Rain" in front of 74,000 fans, every one of them singing along, in the driving Miami rain.

It was a recipe for magic - and a performance that is widely hailed as the best in the long, storied history of the Super Bowl halftime show.

The year was 2007, the Super Bowl was XLI (a forgettable affair that saw Peyton Manning's Colts cruise to a win over Rex Grossman's overmatched Bears) and Prince stole the show.

With news of the pop legend's passing Thursday, let's take a moment to relive that unforgettable performance:

Prince's larger-than-life silhouette behind a flowing sheet stands out as a particularly memorable moment.

In a rarity for Super Bowl halftime performances, Prince performed a few covers - including Foo Fighters' "Best of You."

XLI was also the first Super Bowl ever to feature rain.
