One night after painfully taking a Kelvin Herrera pitch to the knee, Detroit Tigers slugger Victor Martinez achieved a prestigious hitting milestone, collecting his 1,000th career RBI Wednesday versus the Kansas City Royals.
Martinez is now the fifth Venezuelan-born player to reach the 1,000-RBI plateau, joining teammate Miguel Cabrera, Andres Galarraga, Bobby Abreu, and Magglio Ordonez.
"You know what? No lie, I think it means a lot," Martinez said postgame. "Never thought I was going to make it, first of all, to the big leagues, and then to get to this point. Proud of everything I've done in my career."
The 13-year veteran is off to a solid start this year, hitting .263/.349/.500 with two homers and nine RBIs in 13 contests.
