D.C. United boss Ben Olsen fined, suspended for entering field of play

D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen has reportedly been issued a one-game suspension and a $500 fine for entering the field during play to retrieve an extra ball during his side's 1-0 loss to Toronto FC at RFK Stadium.

According to MLS rules, "bench personnel ... are prohibited from entering the field of play at any time."

As a result, he won't be on the sidelines for his team's upcoming match against the New England Revolution.

"It's absurd that I have to watch this game from the stands," Olsen said, according to a report by Steven Goff of the Washington Post.

"I agree with the rule itself. But the rule is supposed to stop coaches from doing anything that might set off trouble or affect the action. That has nothing to do with what I did. I retrieved a loose ball off the field while another ball was in play. I'm not sure enough thought was given to this from the disciplinary committee as my only intention was to make sure the ball was out of play."

While the club may appeal the decision, as it stands, Olsen will be restricted to the mezzanine level of RFK Stadium. His assistant Chad Ashton would take over on the touchline.
