Big 12 grants Kansas QBs Cozart, Ford medical hardship waivers

Kansas hasn't won a game since Nov. 8, 2014, but did receive some good news off the field Wednesday involving the quarterback position.

The Big 12 granted medical hardship waivers to quarterbacks Montell Cozart and Deondre Ford, who both missed large parts of the 2015 season due to injuries.

"It's great to see the Big 12 is giving Montell and Deondre a year back after both of these guys had their junior seasons end prematurely," head coach David Beaty said. "They have worked tirelessly with our medical staff to get healthy and we are fortunate to have two more seasons with them in our program."

Cozart started three of the first four games of the season, but suffered a shoulder injury against Iowa State that kept him out the remainder of the campaign. Prior to sustaining the injury, the junior pivot threw for 752 yards with two touchdowns on the season.

Ford appeared in just two games in his junior campaign, sustaining a season ending hand injury against Rutgers on Sept. 26.

The return of both pivots means a three-way race for the starting spot is likely, as Ryan Willis hopes to hold onto his starting job. Due to the injuries to Cozart and Ford, the freshman was thrust into the starting lineup, finishing the season with 1,719 yards passing and nine touchdowns.

The Jayhawks open the 2016 season hosting Rhode Island on Sept. 3.
