Baylor's Briles concerned with sexual assault allegations surrounding program

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

As sexual assault allegations swirl around the Baylor program, Art Briles has largely avoided the topic when dealing with media.

That changed in a small way Tuesday during the Big 12 coaches teleconference, as the Bears coach was asked about the controversy, and provided a very brief answer.

It's a situation where it's a concern," admitted Briles. "It's something we're dealing with on a daily basis."

The program has been rocked by the allegations as of late, with former star defensive end Shawn Oakman the latest to be arrested. The NFL draft hopeful was arrested last week on a count of sexual assault.

The list of offenders doesn't end with Oakman, either. Former tight end Tre'Von Armstead was dismissed by Briles last September after school officials learned he had sex with a woman too impaired to give consent. Former defensive end Tevin Elliott was convicted of rape in 2014, and is currently serving a 20-year sentence.

Boise State transfer Sam Ukwuachu was found guilty of sexual assault in 2014 as well. His case drew national attention for Briles, after former Broncos coach Chris Petersen claimed he warned the Baylor coach of Ukwuachu prior to his transfer.

In the wake of the Ukwuachu conviction, the school hired an outside law firm to conduct a review as to how the charge was handled.
