Report: Syracuse's Scissum, Winfield allegedly stabbed by former teammate

Syracuse defensive backs Chauncey Scissum and Corey Winfield were allegedly stabbed Saturday evening by former teammate Naesean Howard, sources told Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com.

An Upstate University Hospital spokesperson told Bailey that Winfield is in stable condition, but was unable to offer an update on Scissum's status.

Howard was arrested Saturday for allegedly stabbing two 21-year-olds and charged with two counts of assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, police confirmed. A statement from the university Sunday morning identified the stabbing victims as Syracuse students Howard knew and added he'd been suspended from the school indefinitely.

Howard was dismissed by former Orange coach Scott Shafer in 2014 for violating team rules. After Dino Babers was hired following Shafer's firing, Howard attempted to rejoin the football program in February, but was told that wouldn't be an option until summer practice.

Scissum posted 43 tackles from his safety position last season, while Winfield had 30 tackles with two interceptions and two sacks at cornerback. Both players are in line for starting positions in the secondary when Syracuse opens the season against Colgate on Sept. 2.
