Report: Texas Tech making strong push to keep Tubby Smith

Texas Tech is making a strong push to keep head coach Tubby Smith from taking the same position with Memphis, according to Dan Wolken of USA TODAY Sports.

Smith has emerged as the Tigers' top target, reports Gary Parrish of CBS Sports. However, It appears the two parties still have ground to close before any official announcement is made, especially with the Red Raiders reportedly making an effort to retain Smith.

Memphis was left in a bind when Pastner took the Georgia Tech job last week.

The 64-year-old Smith is not short of coaching experience and has done wonders for the Red Raiders since taking over in 2013. After not appearing in the NCAA tournament since 2007, it only took Smith three seasons to get them back there in 2016.

Memphis has some work to do after missing out on the tourney for the past two years. They've also lost coveted recruit Charlie Moore thanks to Pastner's exit.
