Cagliari Calcio has kicked off plans for a new stadium.

The city council in the Sardinian capital confirmed Wednesday evening that there is sufficient public interest in building a new facility for the Serie B side.

Cagliari's struggled to get the necessary clearance to play in its current home, the Stadio Sant'Elia, over the past few years. During its time in Serie A, Cagliari often had to relocate its home matches to Parma and Trieste because of the crumbling infrastructure.

The new 21,000-seat seaside stadium is expected to cost €55 million. The goal is to build not only a four-star venue that could hold Champions League matches and Euro and World Cup qualifiers, but an all-around recreation centre with shops, gyms, VIP boxes, and general offices.

Cagliari - currently in second place in Serie B and fighting for promotion to the top flight - expects to have it all ready by spring 2019.
