Michigan State considering holding spring practice in warmer climate

Mark Dantonio and Michigan State could follow Jim Harbaugh's lead and schedule future spring practices off-site in a warmer climate.

Just days after Michigan announced it would hold four practices in Florida during spring break, the Spartans boss weighed in on the idea.

"I think it's creative, there's no question about that," Dantonio said Thursday at a Spartans function in Grand Rapids. "From our standpoint, we've never thought to do that, but we're thinking about it nowadays."

Harbaugh's bold idea to move practice south did not sit well with SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, who reportedly called for the NCAA to ban the practice. As long as the idea is legal, it's something Dantonio will consider.

"If we want to go to Florida or someplace else in Texas or something like that, it would be our option to do that, and I guess that's allowed right now," the 59-year-old said. "I do think it's important to have a level playing field."

Despite some incredible success on the field, Michigan State has never finished with a top 20 recruiting class under Dantonio. Venturing into different areas of the country might help the Spartans land some new talent.
