School trustees at Temple voted unanimously Monday to move forward with plans to pursue a new on-campus football stadium, according to Susan Snyder of Philly.com.

Temple has proposed a $125-million stadium that would carry a capacity of 35,000 seats. The school still needs to study potential sites for the building, which could cost around $1 million, and would need to secure funding for the rest of the project.

The Owls have been renting out Lincoln Financial Field - home of the Philadelphia Eagles - since 2003. A new on-campus stadium would pose obvious logistical benefits for fans, and financial incentives for the school.

However, such a project would come with a great deal of controversy, as many residents in the area are adamantly against the building of a stadium in the residential community. Multiple groups have formed an organization called Stadium Stompers to protest the proposed stadium. Mayor Jim Kenney also opposes the idea.

Temple says it would rely on donations and saved money from no longer having to pay rent at Lincoln Financial Field to construct the facility.
