Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith is expected to make a full recovery following reconstructive knee surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL, a source told Sports Illustrated's Brian Hamilton.

"What we do know is there's going to be a full recovery," the source said. "The repair is solid, and he's very optimistic. We're optimistic. And Jaylon is ready to get going with his rehab."

The surgery reportedly "went about as well as it possibly could have."

Smith suffered the devastating injury to his left knee during the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day. There were concerns the Butkus Award winner's knee suffered nerve damage, which would be more concerning long term.

"The nerve was healthy and in great condition," the source said.

Smith was projected to be a surefire top-10 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft prior to the injury. The junior has yet to declare his intentions regarding the draft, and has until Jan. 18 to do so.
