It appears one of the hottest coaching candidates in college football is staying put.

Houston head coach Tom Herman has agreed in principle to a new contract with the school, according to Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle. It had been reported the Cougars had approved an increase to Herman's salary in hopes of keeping him.

Herman is now set to earn a base salary of $3 million per year, more than doubling his previous deal, according to Duarte.

"We've agreed in principle is the best way to put it," Herman said. "We're working out the details."

It was believed by many that Herman would move over to one of the Power 5 vacancies, after guiding Houston to an 11-1 record this season. He spent the past three campaigns working as an offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer at Ohio State.

The news should disappoint schools like Miami, Maryland, and South Carolina, which no doubt were eyeing Herman as a top candidate.
