Virginia Tech hires Justin Fuente as head coach

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

Virginia Tech has found a successor to the legendary Frank Beamer with the school announcing Justin Fuente as its new head coach Sunday.

The former Memphis coach led the Tigers to a 9-3 mark this season, and will take over after Beamer's retirement following a 29-year run.

Fuente orchestrated a remarkable turnaround with Memphis after taking over in 2012. After a 4-8 debut season followed by a 3-9 campaign in 2013, the Tigers record over the 2014 and 2015 seasons was a combined 19-6.

The Tigers win over Ole Miss in October marked the program's first victory over a ranked opponent since 1996.

Long-time Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster will continue with the same role on Fuente's staff.

Beamer, the winningest coach in school history, will coach the team in the upcoming bowl game before giving way to his 39-year-old replacement.
