Report: Iowa State expected to name Matt Campbell head coach

Raj Mehta / USA TODAY Sports

Iowa State is expected to name Toledo's Matt Campbell as its new head coach in the next 48 hours, according to Sports Illustrated's Thayer Evans and Pete Thamel.

Sources also told the pair that Iowa State has cancelled all other interviews.

Last week, the Cyclones indicated Paul Rhoads would not return next year, after guiding Iowa State to a 3-9 record in 2015. The Cyclones finished 2-10 in 2014, and failed to win a conference game.

Toledo appears to be making one final effort to keep Campbell, as athletic director Mike O'Brien told the Associated Press they have made the head coach a new contract offer.

"We think very highly of Matt Campbell and have made him a very generous offer to keep him as our head football coach," O'Brien said.

Campbell will have his hands full if he lands the Cyclones job, but he has done an impressive job with the Rockets. Toledo has won nine games in back-to-back seasons, and will be looking to win a bowl game for the second year in a row under Campbell's watch.
