Deshaun Watson keeps Clemson perfect with win over South Carolina

Jeff Blake-USA TODAY Sports

Deshaun Watson has been climbing up Heisman boards in recent weeks, and his dominant performance against South Carolina on Saturday could move him atop the list.

The sophomore quarterback rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 279 yards and a touchdown through the air, as No. 1 Clemson capped an undefeated regular season with a 37-32 win over their in-state rival.

The Tigers jumped out to a 21-3 lead early in the third quarter before the Gamecocks stormed back to cut it to 28-25 with 12 minutes remaining. Watson's third rushing touchdown of the game, followed by a Greg Huegel 36-yard field goal, put the game out of reach.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Watson's 114 yards on the ground are a career high, and he topped the 100-yard mark on the ground for the third time in four games.
  • The sophomore's 279 yards passing are his lowest total since Oct. 24 against Miami, but with the success the Tigers experienced on the ground, not much was needed through the air.
  • Running back Wayne Gallman also topped the 100-yard plateau for the Tigers, finishing with 102, his seventh game over the century mark this season.
  • Gamecocks quarterback Perry Orth threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns against the nation's third-ranked pass defense.
  • Clemson freshman receiver Deon Cain caught five balls for 96 yards and a score.
  • The 32 points represent the highest scoring total of the season for South Carolina.

Play Of The Game

Watson was dominant throughout the game, accounting for four touchdowns, but it was his first rushing score of the game, and the subsequent celebration, that stole the headlines.
