Georgia's Nick Chubb suffers serious left knee injury

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Georgia running back Nick Chubb left Saturday's game with what appeared to be a serious left knee injury.

Chubb's leg bent awkwardly during a run on the Bulldogs' first play from scrimmage as he was tackled out of bounds. His knee bent backwards and he looked to be in extreme agony as he was taken to the sideline. The injury appeared gruesome, and the video, which is not for the faint of heart, was not shown on reply by CBS.

Georgia's training staff examined Chubb on the sideline for quite a while, a towel draped over his face as he tried to fight back the obvious pain. Several teammates and even head coach Mark Richt came over to offer their prayers and encouragement.

After walking from the training table with the help of a pair of trainers, Chubb collapsed while making his way to the cart. He was eventually placed on the cart, where he regained consciousness, and was taken back to the locker room to undergo X-rays. While the extent of the injury is currently unknown, it appears to be severe, and he was declared out for the game. Chubb, with crutches, returned to Georgia's sideline in the second half in street clothes.

Richt offered an encouraging update on Chubb's status after the game.

Chubb entered the contest with a streak of 13 straight games with at least 100 rushing yards, tying the school record held by Herschel Walker. Through five weeks, his 745 yards on the ground ranked third among all FBS players and he was averaging more than 8 yards per carry.

With Chubb out, Sony Michel and Keith Marshall will look to carry the load at running back for Georgia.
