Texas stuns No. 10 Oklahoma in Red River Rivalry

Matthew Emmons / USA TODAY Sports

Charlie Strong can breathe a little easier this week.

Texas shocked No. 10 Oklahoma 24-17 on Saturday in the Red River Rivalry, as the Sooners looked completely outmatched against a Longhorns team that gave up 50 points to TCU last week.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Oklahoma was held to only 278 yards of offense after averaging 522 so far this season.
  • Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield was limited to just 211 yards passing and a score, while Samaje Perine only managed 36 yards rushing.
  • Texas threw only 12 passes on the day, but its rushing attack picked up the slack. The Longhorns ran for 313 yards with D'Onta Foreman and Jerrod Heard running for 117 and 115, respectively.
  • Foreman had a career-long 81-yard run for Texas.
  • This was only Texas' second win in the Red River Rivalry in the last six games and Strong's first as coach of the Longhorns.
  • The Longhorns' defense posted a season-high six sacks.
  • Tyrone Swoopes came in and threw a touchdown pass for Texas.
  • Oklahoma drops to 4-1 with the loss and its playoff hopes have taken a big hit.

Play of the Game

What a difference a week makes. The Longhorns were criticized this week for taking shots at each other in the media and some were calling for Strong to be fired, but it's clear that the players are very happy with their head coach.

Methinks those #Texas players love their coach. Awesome scene. #HookEm

The Sooners will try to rebound next week versus Kansas State, while the Longhorns will get next week off before taking on the Wildcats themselves on Oct. 24.
