Oregon State's starting quarterback contest goes down to the wire

Scott Olmos / USA TODAY Sports

Oregon State's top two quarterbacks remain in the dark when it comes to which one of them will start the Beavers' season opener against Weber State on Friday.

"We have no idea," quarterback Marcus McMaryion said of the ongoing starter contest, according to Gina Mizell of The Oregonian. "I wish I knew. No one knows yet."

McMaryion remains locked into a battle with Seth Collins for the starter job after neither was able to gain enough separation to win the contest outright during fall training camp.

Sean Mannion served as the starter last season, but entered the NFL draft this summer, where he was selected by the St. Louis Rams.

Regardless of who's tabbed as starter, the two freshman signal-callers will shoulder a hefty burden as they look to help the Beavers improve on a disappointing 5-7 campaign in 2014.

Coach Gary Andersen, however, said he and offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin already know who will start the game, but wouldn't disclose the name of the player, saying he's "sworn to secrecy."
