NC State suspends Shadrach Thornton 2 games for violating team rules

Jeremy Brevard / USA TODAY Sports

NC State will enter the upcoming college season without leading rusher Shadrach Thornton.

Thornton has been suspended by the team for the first two games of the year for violating athletic department policy, coach Dave Doeren told reporters Thursday.

Doeren did not release additional details about the suspension, only saying it was related to a university issue that had happened six months ago. However, ESPN's Brett McMurphy is reporting the ban is for a second failed drug test.

The Wolfpack face lowly Troy and Eastern Kentucky over that span.

Thornton, a senior, ran for 907 yards and nine touchdowns in 2014. He has totaled 2,369 yards and 16 touchdowns over his three seasons in Raleigh.
