Florida State's Jimbo Fisher: 'There was no promise' Everett Golson would start

Everett Golson knew he was entering a quarterback battle when he made the move from Notre Dame to Florida State.

But he still made the move.

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher revealed during his day-long appearances as part of ESPN's "Car Wash" on Tuesday that Golson was not promised the starting role, but merely asked the coach for an opportunity.

"There was no promise," Fisher said while on ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike in the Morning" show, according to Chip Patterson of CBS Sports.

"(Golson) said 'I don't want a promise. I just want the opportunity. I think you can help me become a better quarterback, I like the organization that you have, I like the way you run things, I like where you're at.'"

And so, though the experienced quarterback has been "gelling" with his teammates over the summer, Golson will battle with junior Sean Maguire for the starting role.

Both Golson and Maguire will compete with incoming freshmen J.J. Cosentino, the No. 3 recruit in the state of Pennsylvania, and Deondre Francois, ranked third nationally at the dual threat quarterback position by ESPN.

Fisher was pleased that Golson came ready to work, not expecting first-string status to be handed to him.

"That's what I loved about him," Fisher continued. "He didn't come here with any expectations and he is really fitting in with our team very well."
