Utah's Dominique Hatfield charged with 1st-degree felony aggravated robbery

Utah cornerback Dominique Hatfield has been charged with the first-degree felony aggravated robbery, according to documents obtained by the Salt Lake Tribune's Matthew Piper.

Hatfield was arrested on Tuesday night after he allegedly pulled a knife on a man he was meeting from a classified ad, making away with $180 in cash on foot. The victim's wife later contacted the seller, Hatfield, who was allegedly using the name "David Wilkins" about buying two used iPhones and Hatfield suggested to meet at the same car wash the victim was allegedly robbed at.

According to the documents, Hatfield was detained by police with two phones, but no knife. The 20-year-old told police that he sold phones he got from parties where "sometimes drunk people would leave their phones." Hatfield also admitted that he "made no effort to return the phones to their owners." It was determined that one phone was reported stolen on April 12, 2015.

Hatfield was released from Salt Lake County jail to after posting $50,000 bail.

First-degree felony aggravated robbery is punishable by five years' to life imprisonment.

Hatfield is also facing the class A misdemeanor charge of theft of lost or misdelivered property, carrying a maximum sentence of a year imprisonment and fine of up to $2,500.

Hatfield recorded 38 tackles, one interception, and nine pass breakups last season after switching from receiver to cornerback. He was expected to be a starter come fall.

The Tribune reports that Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is currently on vacation.
