Florida State's Fisher won't guarantee Golson will be starting quarterback

While Everett Golson seems like a natural fit to replace Jameis Winston at quarterback for Florida State, things are not set in stone.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher said Wednesday that the new transfer will compete for a job with spring standout Sean Maguire.

"Sean had a tremendous spring and we're very comfortable with Sean, and we expressed that (to Golson) from the get-go," Fisher told ESPN 97.9 FM in Tallahassee, as transcribed by CBS Sports. "You can't guarantee anything. But at the same time, it was a chance for us. You've got another really, really good football player. He's taken his team to a national championship game, he has tremendous upside."

Regardless of whether Golson wins the job or not, Fisher couldn't pass up the chance to bring in a player of his skill level.

"It makes no sense not to (welcome Golson) because of the depth and the experience and the talent level," Fisher said. "It gives us a tremendous chance to enhance our football team and win another championship."

Despite Maguire's impressive performance this spring, the job still figures to be Golson's to lose. The former Notre Dame pivot threw 29 touchdowns last season and ran for eight more, and has the experience of playing in a BCS game in the past. That's going to be a difficult resume for Fisher to ignore.
