College Football Week 13: Perine, Hardy, Barrett excel on record-breaking day

The 13th week of the college football schedule was short on marquee matchups with rivalry week on deck, but there was still a lot on the line for some of the nation's top programs.

Here are some of the day's most important takeaways:

Boise State goes back to the well

The most memorable play in the history of the Boise State football program is easily the Statue of Liberty play the Broncos ran on a two-point conversion to beat Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Well, Boise State went right back to that well on Saturday against Wyoming, and the play was a raging success once again as standout running back Jay Ajayi ran the ball into the end zone for a 20-yard score.

Pac-12 South picture still unclear

The Pac-12 South race remains jumbled with three two-loss teams still sitting atop the division.

UCLA beat USC in convincing fashion at the Rose Bowl, coming away with a 38-20 victory, but Arizona State and Arizona each won on Saturday.

The Sun Devils and Wildcats will face off next Friday in another game that should bring some clarity to the divisional race. Meanwhile, UCLA hosts Stanford in the regular season finale for the Bruins.

Catch of the Year, maybe

Virginia wide receiver Canaan Severin made what may be the catch of the year against Miami.

UCLA can't figure out eye black

UCLA's biggest game of the year is going down at the Rose Bowl. The team surely spent a lot of time prepping for Saturday's showdown with USC and the players definitely took in a lot of information.

Apparently, along the way, the Bruins players forgot how to do some basic tasks, like putting on eye black.

So, Arkansas is something

With five losses, it's tough to see Arkansas getting a whole lot of respect in either the AP poll or College Football Playoff Rankings this week, but the Razorbacks have looked terrific in back-to-back wins over ranked SEC opponents.

The Razorbacks handed Ole Miss its third loss in four games Saturday. Arkansas's five losses have all come against opponents that were ranked inside the national top-10 at the time. 

Jameis shoves an official

Because he in no way wants to help his supporters and takes extreme joy out of adding fuel to the fire his detractors have lit around him, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston shoved an official out of his way as he was trying to hurry to the line in Saturday's game against Boston College.

Winston was not ejected or even penalized as a result of the incident. He explained the incident after the game. 

"He was just holding me because he said we had a substitution," Winston said, according to ESPN. "It was actually a fast-tempo play, so I was trying to get up under there and let it ride."

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said that the play called for Winston to snap the ball quickly, but the umpire determined that Florida State had made a substitution at running back.

"I don't think (Winston) realized it. He was caught up in the excitement of the moment," Fisher said. "Hey, you get emotional. He didn't realize. He thought he could snap the ball. ... He knew that was his job – get out there and set and snap the ball."

Fisher was pleased that the officials didn't issue any punishment against Winston as a result of the incident.

"They did a good job on that from that standpoint," Fisher said. "I think they understood what was going on. Those guys handled that part of the game. They managed the game itself and that part, I thought, very good. They did a very nice job."

Mid-afternoon slate plagued by injuries

Whether it was Alabama's Amari Cooper, Stanford's Ty Montgomery, Arizona's Anu Solomon, Pitt's James Conner or Arkansas's Brandon Allen, no player was safe in the mid-afternoon games.

Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace and Florida State wide receiver Rashad Greene also left their games with injuries, but both would later return.

Justin Hardy sets career receptions record

East Carolina wide receiver Justin Hardy broke the FBS record for career receptions by bringing in his 350th catch in Saturday's game against Tulane, breaking former Oklahoma receiver Ryan Broyles' career mark.

Samaje Perine runs into the record books

Oklahoma freshman running back Samaje Perine broke the FBS record for rushing yards in a single game, churning out 427 yards in a little more than three quarters against Kansas.

Perine's record-breaking run came on a 42-yard tote.

Perine's performance comes just a week after Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon broke the record, running for 408 yards in three quarters against Nebraska.

Interestingly enough, LaDainian Tomlinson, the previous record-holder, saw his record stand for 5,474 days, while Gordon's record stood for only seven.

Offensive lineman end-around

Michigan State offensive lineman Connor Kruse had his number called on a strange end-around which saw the guard rumble across the line of scrimmage for what was only a minimal gain.

Barrett breaking records

While many left Ohio State for dead when news came down that Braxton Miller would be lost for the year, J.T. Barrett had other ideas.

The redshirt freshman has done a number on the program's record book against Indiana, breaking Troy Smith's school record for passing touchdowns in a season, which had been set by Troy Smith (30), and eclipsing Miller's mark for yards of total offense in a season (3,310 yards in 2012).

Interestingly enough, Troy Smith, the 2006 Heisman winner, will be honored by the Buckeyes at halftime of next week's game against Michigan.

Conley lays out

Georgia certainly didn't need an A effort to get by Charleston Southern on Saturday, but wide receiver Chris Conley was out there giving it his all anyway.

Here's Conley laying out to bring in a 23-yard touchdown reception late in the first half – his second score of the game.

Cambridge hosted ESPN's College GameDay program Saturday and the students at Harvard showed off their smarts.
