Report: Syracuse football program under NCAA investigation

Rich Barnes / USA TODAY Sports

The NCAA investigation into Syracuse's athletic department that centered around the school's basketball team has now spread to the gridiron.

The basketball program, headed by Jim Boeheim, had been under investigation since 2012 regarding players' academic records.

The school will sit before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions on Oct. 30 and 31. The events being investigated pertain to the football team during two to three years around 2004 or 2005 where extra benefits are the issue, according to Brett McMurphy of ESPN.

Current head coach Scott Shafer didn't provide any comment on the situation, nor did Greg Robinson, who coached the Orange from 2005-2008. Doug Marrone, who coached the team from 2009-2012, denied any wrongdoing.

"There's nothing that I know about that we did that wasn't either punished or put forth ... One thing I did, if we made a mistake, an incidental contact or something, I just always reported it. It's not worth it. This way I can sleep at night," he said according to Nate Mink of syracuse.com.

Marrone was not called upon by the NCAA to speak at an upcoming hearing pertaining to the matter before the Committee of Infractions. It's not known if Shafer or Robinson have been called to speak before the committee.
