Father of Louisville's Reggie Bonnafon passes away

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Louisville quarterback Reggie Bonnafon's father has passed away, according to Cardinals coach Bobby Petrino.

"We've had a tragedy in our family today, as Reggie Bonnafon's father, Wallace, has passed away. Please keep Reggie and his family in your thoughts and prayers," Petrino told media.

Reggie is a real family guy. He had a close relationship with Wallace as our staff did. I ask that everyone’s prayers and thoughts go to Reggie and his family as he works through this. I got to talk to Reggie a little bit ago. It’s certainly going to be a very trying time for him.

The freshman quarterback and Louisville native committed to Louisville last year while Charlie Strong was coach. When Petrino was hired, he made Bonnafon a priority, convincing the youngster to stay at Louisville.

Bonnafon saw his first meaningful game action during Saturday's 23-21 loss to Virginia, when he entered in place of starting quarterback Will Gardner. He completed six-of-nine passes for 39 yards before Gardner went back in.

In total Bonnafon has thrown for 151 yards and one score this season. He has also rushed for 21 yards and two touchdowns.
