Murphy's law: Boston College pivot runs all over USC defense en route to upset

Gregory J. Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

The unranked Boston College Eagles upset the no. 9 USC Trojans Saturday night on the heels of quarterback Tyler Murphy.

The former Florida Gator Murphy rushed for 191 yards and passed for 54 yards.

Boston College scored 24 straight points beginning in the second quarter en route to the 37-31 win.

Running backs Miles Willis and Jon Hilliman each rushed for 89 yards, while freshmen Sherman Alston added 55 yards.

In total, Boston College racked up an incredible 452 rushing yards on USC's beleaguered defense.

USC didn't back down easily, especially after a late fourth quarter score to close the gap to six points. Quarterback Cody Kessler found receiver Darreus Rogers for the 14-yard touchdown strike. Kessler ended the day off with four TD passes and 317 yards, and no interceptions.

Boston College's rushing numbers proved to be too much for USC, though, as Murphy broke the camel's back on a late-game 66-yard rush.

USC's inability to run the ball proved to be its Achilles heel, as the team achieved just 20 yards on the ground.

The victory was Boston College's first in 20 years as an unranked team beating an opponent within the top 10. The last time that happened was in 1994, against then No. 8 Notre Dame.
