Texas defensive coordinator compares Brett Hundley to Cam Newton

The Texas Longhorns have a big task ahead of them for Saturday's showdown with the UCLA Bruins at AT&T Stadium. Texas was blown out of the water by BYU last week, completely unable to slow down Cougars quarterback Taysom Hill. Now the Longhorns will have to try to figure out how to stop UCLA's Brett Hundley.

The Bruins junior quarterback is among the best signal callers in the nation and appears destined for the NFL. Texas defensive coordinator Vance Bedford will have the difficult job of trying to contain Hundley and in viewing film of the quarterback, he sees someone comparable to Hundley already playing on Sundays.

"He reminds me a lot of Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers," Bedford said, via 247Sports.com. "Big, strong, athletic. I must admit, he has one of the best arms I've seen. I had a chance to go against [Matt] Stafford when he was at Georiga, [Ryan] Mallet at Arkansas - this kid has that type of arm.

"The entire field is wide open. He can be on one hash and throw the out-cut, and I tell you what, it's like a bazooka coming out of there. He's a special talent."

Like Newton, Hundley has the ability to make plays with his feet as well as with his arm. Last season he rushed for 748 yards and added 11 touchdowns, but it really is his arm that leaves Bedford the most concerned before Saturday's game.

"Watching video of him and I'm like, 'Man. He can throw the ball anywhere,'" Bedford said. "He has an NFL arm."

In two games this season, Hundley has completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 638 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. If he gets going against the Longhorns' defense, Texas will likely be facing a 1-2 start under new head coach Charlie Strong.
