Nebraska's Bo Pelini says marijuana is 'out of control' in society

Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini took a break from talking about the Cornhuskers' upcoming season to express concerns about marijuana consumption among America's youth.

His views on the subject appear to have been instigated by a question surrounding recruiting and the difficulties coaches and schools face when conducting background checks on potential players, with Pelini saying marijuana use is "out of control" in society, not just with college recruits.

“Let’s face it, it’s not OK,” Pelini said during Friday morning's Big Red Breakfast. “I think everybody that’s our age, my age, hopefully understands that it’s not OK. It’s not good. It’s not good for you. And these kids do it on a daily basis and a yearly basis … and it’s a real problem out there.

“Fortunately for us it is not [an issue] in our program. But I can tell you around college football and college athletics … serious in college. I guarantee you walk into dorms nowadays and it is a horrible problem.”

Pelini's comments come a day after the NFL upheld Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon's year-long suspension after violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

Pelini, however, didn't offer any ideas on how to resolve the alleged widespread use of marijuana.

“I think it’s something in society we need to get fixed, but unfortunately they get bad information,” he said.
