Florida OC moving from sideline to press box to call plays

Matthew Emmons / USA TODAY Sports

Florida offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier is headed back upstairs and will call plays from the press box Saturday against Tennessee, head coach Jim McElwain said Wednesday, according to Robbie Andreu of the Gainesville Sun.

Nussmeier spent the season opener versus Michigan calling plays from the sideline, but his unit scored only three points and struggled to establish any sort of rhythm. The team's other 14 points came on interception returns by the defense.

Nussmeier has generally coached from the press box in the past but had experience calling plays from the sideline prior to the Michigan game. In theory, a view from the press box should provide coaches with a better view of the field, while the sideline position allows for better communication with players.

Nussmeier and McElwain were heavily criticized after the season opener, where their attempt to spark the Gators' offense failed once again.

Florida hasn't played since Sept. 2 due to Hurricane Irma.
