Saban: Media making 'a quarterback competition out of nothing'

When Nick Saban speaks, the media listens, and the famed Alabama head coach had quite a bit to say Tuesday in regards to a perceived quarterback controversy.

During his annual fundraising event "A Night with Nick Saban," in Mobile, Saban addressed what he thinks is a false controversy incited by the media surrounding quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa.

"Jalen Hurts played a lot of good football for us last year, and he's certainly made a lot of progress this spring," Saban said, according to Charlie Potter of 247Sports. "And even though all of you in the press are trying to make a quarterback competition out of nothing, which is what you're doing right now, there really isn't one."

Whether or not there is an actual controversy brewing, the depth the Crimson Tide currently boast at the quarterback position is most definitely undeniable.

Both Hurts and Tagovailoa impressed during Saturday's spring game, throwing for a combined 614 yards, with Tagovailoa edging Hurts with 313 yards to his 301. Though competition is something Saban encourages, he made it clear that it's simply for the purpose of making both players better.

"We want both guys to play at a high level, and I think the competition that they offer each other is probably healthy for both," Saban said. "Hopefully it will make both players better players. We’re just looking forward and feel fortunate to have two outstanding young men that can play at a high level at that position."
