Harbaugh deems Speight pilot starter, as QB race remains 'a meritocracy'

Despite a dismal performance in Michigan's spring game, Wilton Speight remains the Wolverines' starting quarterback, but change could be on the way.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh told Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press that the soon-to-be senior will end spring camp as the starting quarterback, but the competition is far from over.

"It'll always be (a competition)," Harbaugh said at a function in Detroit. "Still over the course of the whole spring practice, Wilton on our depth chart, he's No. 1. But it's a meritocracy. By your effort and by your talent you will be known. That's a good thing for our football team."

Brandon Peters outperformed Speight in Michigan's spring game last weekend, as the starter struggled to a 9-for-26 performance, including two interceptions.

Peters completed 9-of-17 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown, while also adding a score in the rushing game.

Whoever Harbaugh eventually deems the starter will have a massive task awaiting in the opening week, as Michigan faces the formidable Florida defense in an outstanding non-conference matchup.
