Gundy: No plans to sign extension until I'm promised a bigger budget

Mike Gundy still hasn't signed the contract extension he received from Oklahoma State 10 months ago, and the head coach has indicated he has no plans to do so until he's assured more resources for his program.

"In comparison to the league, I need them to be in the middle of the pack," Gundy told Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman, specifically citing salaries for coaches and support personnel, as well as recruiting budgets and other general resources.

"I think they've earned that with what we've accomplished in football. We need recruiting budgets to be in the top three or four in the league. Otherwise, it becomes difficult for me to convince myself, to convince young people, that we can continue to do this or take the next step."

Gundy has guided the Cowboys to three 10-win seasons in the last four years, but Oklahoma State has continued to spend lightly on football compared to top Big 12 cash-splashers like Texas and Oklahoma.

The lack of resources hasn't helped Oklahoma State's recruiting efforts, which is perhaps the reason the Pokes haven't been able to get past the 10-win mark and become a legitimate national contender.

"I just want to get in a room and say, here's the product, where's what it's worth. Here's what it's going to take to maintain and try to take (it) to the next level," Gundy said.

He added, "I understand resources, I understand budgets. I understand we have an $84-million annual budget, right around there, and I know there's other schools that have $110 (million), $150 (million), whatever. I'm not making comparisons to them. I'm making comparisons to the middle of the group."

The 49-year-old pinpointed TCU as an example of the "middle of the group."

Meanwhile, Gundy has reportedly grown increasingly frustrated with Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder. Though he wouldn't go so far as to say he's unhappy at his alma mater, Gundy acknowledged his relationship with Oklahoma State's athletic brass could be better.

"It's kind of like arguing with your wife," he said. "Either you decide to get along and do it, or you say, 'Let's figure something else out.' There's not a lot of discussion, but that's really what it comes down to."

Gundy is under contract with Oklahoma State through the 2019 campaign.
