South Florida defensive back Hassan Childs was shot Saturday night and is in stable condition, Bulls head coach Charlie Strong announced Sunday.

"We are deeply concerned that an incident occurred overnight in which one of our players, Hassan Childs, was injured in a shooting," Strong said in a statement. "Thankfully, Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured. There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time."

The university also released a statement, confirming the incident in question occurred off campus.

Tampa police spokesman Lt. Steve Lee stated that road rage was the catalyst in the incident, and that at approximately 11:15 p.m. Saturday, police received a call from a man named Jovanni Jimenez that another man, later identified as Childs, had pointed a gun at Jimenez and his wife at the Eagles Point Apartments, according to Joey Knight and Kathryn Varn of The Tampa Bay Times.

Jimenez pulled his own gun in response and shot Childs, allegedly in self-defense, hitting him three times in the upper arm and torso.

There was no reason given for the cause of the argument.

Childs appeared in eight games as a junior last season, recording 16 tackles after redshirting in 2015 because of a knee injury.
