Toledo announced Wednesday it has signed head coach Jason Candle to a contract extension through 2021.

The Rockets are coming off of a 9-4 season and an appearance in the Camellia Bowl in Candle's first full season on the sidelines.

In 2015, Candle led Toledo to a Boca Raton Bowl victory.

"We are very pleased to announce the extension of Jason Candle's contract through the 2021 season," athletic director Mike O'Brien said. "Jason has played a very important part of the success of our football program over the last eight years, first as an assistant coach and now as head coach. He is a tremendous leader and teacher of young men, and has a great desire to elevate our football program to even greater heights. We look forward to his leadership for many years to come."

Candle began coaching in 2003 at his alma mater, Mount Union, winning two Division III national championships to go along with two as a player.

The Ohio native was hired by Toledo as receivers coach in 2009, before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2012.
