Report: Lane Kiffin being sued by ex-Alabama player over FAU staff position

New school, same problems, as Florida Atlantic head coach Lane Kiffin cannot stay out of the headlines.

Former Alabama wide receiver A.C. Carter has filed a fraud lawsuit against Kiffin, FAU, and the state of Florida, according to Christopher Walsh of SECCountry.com.

Carter claims Kiffin deliberately misled him about a job with the football program, in order to help Carter use a family relationship to sign a recruit.

However, after the recruit signed his letter of intent, Carter alleges he was told by the school that he didn't pass the required background check conducted by the school and would not be employed.

The failed background check stemned from "two prior minor misdemeanor criminal charges," according to the school.

Carter said the misdemeanor charges had been resolved, with one being from seven years ago.

However, according to A.J. Perez of USA Today, court records show that Carter has at least four arrests, all misdemeanors.

Those records show that in March 2010, Carter was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia in Florida. In November 2010, he was arrested for failure to appear on a drug charge.

Also, Carter was arrested twice in 2014 for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended or revoked license.

Due to believing he had secured the job at FAU, Carter claims he and his wife quit their jobs, as he would reportedly earn $40,000, plus bonuses, and $4,000 to cover moving expenses as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, while also working with wide receivers.

The recruit in question is reportedly D'Anfernee McGriff, who was a four-star running back in 2015 and went to Iowa Western Community College after not enrolling at Florida.

"The prospect's family had just celebrated New Year's Eve together with Plaintiff Antonio Carter and his family just a few weeks earlier," the lawsuit states. "It is believed that this relationship between Plaintiff Antonio Carter and the coveted prospect was known to the coaches and defendants at the time he was hired."

This is not the first time Kiffin's coaching staff at FAU has been in the news.

Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles was previously at Baylor working under his father, Art Briles, who was fired due to a sexual assault scandal involving the football team. As well, Lane's brother Chris Kiffin (defensive coordinator) was found to have violated NCAA recruiting rules while at Ole Miss.

Also, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Eric Mathies was arrested in 2014 for driving under the influence.
