Ohio State names Greg Schiano sole defensive coordinator

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

Greg Schiano will be the man running Ohio State's defense next season, as the school announced he will be the sole defensive coordinator for the 2017 campaign.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach oversaw the Buckeyes' unit alongside Luke Fickell last season, but with Fickell taking over as Cincinnati head coach, Schiano is the sole man for the job going forward.

Ohio State's defense was a dominant unit in 2016, ranking third in the country in points allowed, at just 15.5 per game. The secondary was hit hard by early entry to the NFL Draft, so Schiano certainly has his work cut out for him to duplicate the success in 2017.

The move to give Schiano control will keep some continuity on the defensive side of the football, something the offensive side is battling heading into next season. The Buckeyes hired Kevin Wilson as offensive coordinator and Ryan Day as quarterbacks coach in the offseason.
