Derwin James gets medical redshirt, now eligible through 2019

Florida State safety Derwin James has been awarded a medical redshirt by the NCAA, extending his eligibility through the 2019 season, according to the Orlando Sentinel's Safid Deen.

James suffered a meniscus tear in the second game of Florida State's 2016 campaign, and was sidelined the rest of the way.

The medical redshirt means James will still be considered a sophomore next season instead of a junior, though it may not make much difference in the long run since the standout is expected to jump to the NFL sooner rather than later.

James registered 91 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and five pass breakups in a healthy freshman year. He's expected to be ready for the beginning of the 2017 campaign when the Seminoles open the schedule against Alabama.

Fellow safety Nate Andrews is among the other Seminoles who received a medical redshirt, meaning he'll be eligible to return for a fifth year.
