Mississippi State dismisses Hankerson after 3rd arrest this month

Matt Bush-USA TODAY Sports

Following his third arrest in the month of December, Mississippi State has dismissed freshman John Michael Hankerson.

According to Philip Miller, an investigator with the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's office, the first-year defensive back was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Mississippi on Wednesday.

Miller told ESPN's Mark Schlabach that Hankerson has been charged with 10 felonies, including five counts of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, and two counts of kidnapping. All but two of the charges stem from a Dec. 17 incident in which he allegedly pistol-whipped and robbed four men.

"Mr. Hankerson and two unidentified black males were together and went to the Campus Trails apartment complex, where they came across four other males and pulled handguns on them," Miller said. "They pistol-whipped three of them in the head with their firearms. They took property from the victims and fled the scene."

Head coach Dan Mullen suspended Hankerson indefinitely after his first arrest, but his career at Mississippi State is now over.
