Ex-Notre Dame safety Redfield has plea deal dropped after failed drug test

Any chance of former Notre Dame safety Max Redfield avoiding jail time may have just evaporated.

Fulton County prosecutors called off a plea bargain Tuesday that was filed by Redfield pertaining to gun and marijuana charges because of a failed drug test, according to Becky Malewitz of The South Bend Tribune. Redfield was arrested Aug. 19 along with four other current and former Notre Dame players in a traffic stop.

The plea deal would have allowed Redfield to avoid jail time, with a sentence of 180 days on probation. Fulton County Deputy Prosecutor Michael Marrs told Malewitz that a positive test for marijuana in a court-ordered drug test led to the withdrawal of Redfield's bargain.

Redfield's defense attorney Randy Fisher had his own questions about the test following the withdrawal of the deal.

"I question the validity of the test," Fisher said. "We had Mr. Redfield tested independently the same week as part of a substance abuse program he entered on his own, and he tested negative for any drugs prior to the court-ordered testing."

Both sides acknowledged they would try to work out a new deal, but Marrs noted the failed test will lead to a portion of jail time in any new agreement.
