Watson tops Jackson, wins 2nd straight Davey O'Brien award

Stew Milne / USA TODAY Sports

Clemson's Deshaun Watson has captured his second straight Davey O'Brien Award, given annually to the top quarterback in the country.

The junior standout threw for 3,914 yards and 37 touchdowns this season, adding 529 yards and six scores on the ground. While Watson's numbers are certainly impressive, they don't quite match last season's gaudy totals, when he became the first quarterback ever to throw for 4,000 yards and run for 1,000 yards.

Watson was given the nod over Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield and Louisville's Louisville's Lamar Jackson, and became the fourth player to win the award on two different occasions. The previous three were BYU's Ty Detmer, Florida's Danny Wuerffel, and Oklahoma's Jason White.

The three finalists will battle it out again on Saturday, when the Heisman Trophy is awarded in New York.
