CFP director: 'We are confident that four is the right number'

With Penn State, Michigan, and Oklahoma all being left out of the CFP this season, many are calling for an expansion of the field from four to eight teams.

Bill Hancock, executive director of the CFP, is not one of them.

"We are confident that four is the right number," Hancock said on teleconference Sunday, as per Ralph Russo of the Associated Press. "I don't anticipate any discussion about expanding."

The first year of the CFP saw TCU drop from third to six over the final two rankings, despite the fact the Horned Frogs won their final game by 50-plus points. Last year provided almost no debate, as Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, and Michigan State were all worthy participants.

Hancock stressed the importance of not making decisions based on one year of chaos, as no two seasons are the same.

"Football seasons are like snowflakes," Hancock said, as per Stewart Mandel of Fox Sports. "They're all different. Next year we'll be talking about a different way it came out."
