Texas A&M president: 'Kevin Sumlin has my complete support'

USA TODAY Sports

Amid whispers that Texas A&M may have some reservations about bringing back head coach Kevin Sumlin, school president Michael Young threw his support behind the 52-year-old Friday.

"Kevin Sumlin is our coach and has my complete support and our athletic director's complete support," Young told Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith, according to the publication's Matthew Watkins.

Sumlin went 8-4 this season - a bowl game result pending - but after a hot start his team once again wilted down the stretch, fueling speculation the university could look for a new leader.

The disappointing second half of the season continued what's become a concerning trend for Texas A&M. Still, Young believes his program is in good hands.

"There is an enormously strong positive movement on that football program that you really have to be conscious of," he said.

The Aggies are 44-20 in five seasons with Sumlin, and each campaign has ended with a bowl game.

Though Young appeared to give his coach an endorsement, he did stop shy of guaranteeing his return to College Station for a sixth season.

When asked if Sumlin will be coaching the Aggies in 2017, Young simply replied, again: "Kevin Sumlin has my complete support."
