Florida International has made Ron Turner the season's first coaching casualty, firing him Sunday amid an 0-4 start.

Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Ron Cooper will serve as the interim coach.

Turner was in his fourth year with the Golden Panthers. Including the four losses this season, he compiled a 10-30 record at FIU.

The decision to fire Turner was made after Saturday's 54-13 loss to Central Florida, according to Dan Wolken of USA TODAY Sports.

The 62-year-old previously spent eight seasons at the helm of Illinois, where he captured a Big Ten title but posted a 35-57 clip and had only two winning seasons.
