Same faces, new places: Ranking the top 5 transfer QBs in 2016

Thanks to a flurry of quarterback action on the transfer market in recent times, the 2016 season features a number of familiar signal-callers on new teams.

With a quarter of the 2016 campaign now in the books, we take a look at how these old faces are performing in their new places, and rank this year's top five transfer quarterbacks so far:

5. Kenny Hill - TCU

Transferred from: Texas A&M

Early returns on the Hill experiment at TCU have produced mixed results. He's already eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in passing, but has struggled to find consistency in his first three games, and made some costly mistakes in the Horned Frogs' loss to Arkansas two weeks ago. A learning curve was to be expected, but perhaps it's a little more steep than some would have hoped.

4. Dakota Prukop - Oregon

Transferred from: Montana State (graduate)

Prukop looked smooth in Oregon's first two games, but stumbled in his first real test against Nebraska last week. The Ducks pivot managed just 146 passing yards against a run-focused Cornhuskers defense, and missed a crucial throw late in the contest that would have put Oregon in position to take the lead. Prukop then bailed on a fourth-and-long on his final snap of the game, tucking the ball and getting dropped near the line of scrimmage when there was still time to get off a throw.

3. Luke Del Rio - Florida

Transferred from: Oregon State

All Florida ever wanted was a game manager, and that's exactly what Del Rio has been since putting on the orange and blue. He's been a calming presence under center for the Gators, keeping mistakes to a minimum and leading Florida to a perfect record through three weeks, albeit against relatively weak opponents. Del Rio suffered a knee injury last week, meaning Florida's quarterback job now rests with another transfer in ex-Purdue pivot Austin Appleby.

2. Davis Webb - Cal

Transferred from: Texas Tech (graduate)

Webb has taken full advantage of his chance to be a starting quarterback again, and wrapped up Week 3 as the second-leading passer in the FBS - trailing only Patrick Mahomes, the man he lost his job to at Texas Tech. It's not hard to put up big numbers in Cal's "Air Raid" offense, but Webb's efficiency has been impressive. He's thrown 13 touchdowns to just three picks, has completed nearly 64 percent of his passes, and is averaging 8.18 yards per pass attempt. He's led Cal to a 2-1 record that includes a win over Texas.

1. Trevor Knight - Texas A&M

Transferred from: Oklahoma (graduate)

If Kevin Sumlin is sweating a little less these days, it's probably because Knight has managed to temporarily cool the seat on which his coach sits. After several years of having to put up with rookie mistakes from young quarterbacks, Sumlin has watched Knight guide Texas A&M to a 3-0 start, picking up hard-fought wins over UCLA and Auburn. Though his numbers aren't eye-popping, Knight has prioritized ball security over stats, and has been every bit the on-field leader and decision-maker that Sumlin hoped he would be when he scooped him up from Oklahoma.
