Wisconsin standout Edwards to miss season opener

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

It's a tough enough task stopping Leonard Fournette with a full roster, but Wisconsin will attempt to do so Saturday without leading tackler T.J. Edwards.

The Badgers' star linebacker will miss the season-opening contest against LSU at Lambeau Field due to a broken foot he suffered in the summer. Edwards was left off the depth chart released last week, signifying he was likely to miss the game, and coach Paul Chryst confirmed the news during a press conference Monday.

Edwards led the Badgers with 86 tackles as a redshirt freshman in 2015, but suffered a broken foot during workouts in June. In his absence, it's expected Chris Orr and Jack Cichy will see more time at inside linebacker.

Wisconsin's rush defense was fourth in the country last season, but lost defensive coordinator Dave Aranda to LSU in the offseason. The Tigers were seventh in the nation in 2015, rushing for an impressive 256.8 yards per game.

Kickoff at Lambeau Field is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET.
